Midweek round up - Wednesday 15th January 2014.

    Midweek Round up.
Midweek player round up from Sophie Beresford.

    FA Cup
Eliot Richards and Ellis Harrison started for Bristol Rovers in their FA Cup third round match at Birmingham. Richards could have put Rovers ahead in the 3rd minute, but his shot was weak. Harrison picked up a yellow card, which means he has three in his last three starts for Rovers. I know boys like to collect things (so do I, for that matter), but yellow cards really aren't the ideal choice. The Championship side won 3-0 - a scoreline described as 'harsh' by BBC Sport - and their fourth-round opponents will be Swansea City, whom they have already knocked out of the League Cup.

Rhoys Wiggins and Simon Church both started for a Charlton Athletic side who fought back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with League Two's Oxford United. This third-round fixture had already been postponed twice and Huddersfield Town must wait even longer to discover who will be their fourth-round opponents.

Emyr Huws made his Manchester City debut in their third round replay against Blackburn Rovers at the Etihad. Huws made his appearance in the 77th minute as Man City thrashed Blackburn 5-0 - though perhaps 'thrashed' isn't quite the right word, considering that Man City have won every domestic home game this season and score an average of four goals a game. Adam Henley played in defence for Blackburn, who didn't let in as many goals as Arsenal.

Lee Fowler played 90 minutes for Kidderminster in their third-round replay at Peterborough United. Many would say the non-league team did well to get a replay in the first place; few would have predicted they'd actually win it. They even managed not to go to pieces when they conceded a penalty at 2-1 ahead. Peterborough scored the penalty, but Kidderminster just went up the other end, stuck the ball in the net, and won 3-2. Kidderminster's next potential victims are Sunderland.

Jack Mackreth had one of Macclesfield Town's best chances in their FA Cup replay at Hillsborough, but this romance always was doomed to failure, with Sheffield Wednesday 4-1 winners. Rhys Taylor played in goal for a Macclesfield side who, according to their manager, could have won it on another day (though presumably not Wednesday). But Macclesfield only lost to Sheff Wed by three goals, and that's not something Leeds United can say.

Wes Burns made another late substitute appearance, this time in the 78th minute, as Bristol City lost their third round replay 2-0 at Watford. Watford keeper Jonathan Bond, formerly of Wales under 21s and currently of England under 21s, was in 'unbeatable form'. He's a good keeper, but let's see how he does in the next round, when Watford visit a stadium called the Etihad.

    League One
Michael Doughty returned to struggling Stevenage's starting line-up for a shock 2-0 home victory over Swindon Town, who are four points outside the play-off places. Sam Wedgbury and Louis Thompson were unused substitutes for the winning and losing sides respectively.
