Midweek round up - Wednesday 5th February 2014.

    Midweek Round up.
Midweek player round up from Sophie Beresford.

    FA Cup

Danny Collins played for away side Nottingham Forest in their FA Cup fourth-round replay. Forest finished 2-0 winners and are now unbeaten in 14 games in all competition, but manager Billy Davies feel it was the League One side who deserved to go through. Forest will face Sheffield United, who knocked out Fulham on Tuesday, a 120th-minute goal saving them from the lottery of penalties. If Sheffield United beat Forest as well, get ready for the puns about blades cutting down forests.

    League One

Wes Burns is seen as a bit of a supersub and in Bristol City’s home match against Coventry City, he did exactly what a supersub ought to do: he came off the bench and scored a goal in the 82nd minute. Unfortunately, one goal isn’t enough when you’re 2-0 down and there wasn’t quite time for a miracle. George Thomas returned to Coventry’s squad as an unused substitute, a week after his surprise debut.

Elliott Hewitt’s run in Gillingham’s side came to an abrupt end when he was sent off for a handball in the 22nd minute. The resulting penalty was duly converted and home side Stevenage grabbed the chance to take all three points in a 3-1 victory. Michael Doughty returned from a knock and was a 63rd-minute substitute for Stevenage; Sam Wedgbury was on the bench.

Craig Jones gave Bury the lead at home to Oxford United in the 56th minute, but Oxford struck back just two minutes later to extend their unbeaten run to six games. Daniel Nardiello made his return from a hamstring problem in the 50th minute: this was his first appearance for Bury since turning his loan move from Rotherham United into a permanent deal.

    Johnstone’s Paint Trophy

Chris Maxwell was on the bench for Fleetwood Town as they lost 3-1 at home to Chesterfield in first leg of the Northern Area Final of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy. This is only the second time Fleetwood have participated in the competition and they’ve knocked out four League One clubs along the way. Neither Maxwell nor the recently-released Alex Titchiner seem to have featured in this competition.

Louis Thompson was promoted to Swindon Town’s starting line-up for the first leg of the Southern Area Final. Swindon were 2-0 down after 14 mins, but Thompson set up Nile Ranger in the 31st minute and a second Swindon goal followed on the stroke of half-time. The match finished two goals apiece, which both teams benefitting from an own goal.
