Midweek round up - Wednesday 12th February 2014.

    Midweek Round up.
Midweek player round up from Sophie Beresford.

    Premier League

Declan John got his fourth consecutive start for Cardiff City, and although the plaudits have quite rightly gone the way of keeper David Marshall (who is, unfortunately, Scottish) and Ben Turner (who is, unfortunately, still dreaming of playing for England), John played his part in keeping a clean sheet as Cardiff drew 0-0 at home to Aston Villa.

Lloyd Isgrove sat on the bench again as Southampton beat Hull City 1-0 away. The goal-line technology proved to be a great help in the important matter of whether or not the ball had crossed the line and, if so, when, but Southampton probably appreciated it more than Hull.

James Collins scored his first goal of the season when he gave West Ham the lead with a  header in the 84th minute of their home match against Norwich City. Replays suggested the goalkeeper did his best to stop him from getting to the ball, but Collins chose to get on with scoring the goal rather than worry about rolling around on the floor. The final score was 2-0 to West Ham. Jack Collison was an unused substitute.

Boaz Myhill was on the bench for West Bromwich Albion in their home match against Chelsea. The league leaders looked to be heading for all three points, but West Brom’s 87th-minute equaliser gave them a 1-1 draw and a share of the points.

Paul Dummett was a half-time substitute for Newcastle United in their home match against Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday. Spurs won 4-0, condemning Newcastle to a fourth consecutive home league game defeat for the first time since 1987.

Ben Davies and Ashley Williams started for Swansea City in their 1-1 away draw against Stoke City. Neil Taylor was an unused substitute. Ryan Shawcross hasn’t done Wales many favours over the years and the Stoke captain was at it again when he prevented Swansea from winning the match with a goal-line clearance.

Joe Allen was an unused substitute for Liverpool as they claimed a 3-2 over win over Fulham. The league’s took the lead twice, but a stoppage time Liverpool penalty robbed them of all three points. In the past, Fulham have been known for their good home form, but they’ve now lost 13 of their last 17.

    Championship

Joel Lynch played for Huddersfield Town in their home match against Nottingham Forest. When you’re a central defender facing a former club at home, one of the things you definitely don’t want to do is to lose 3-0. Unfortunately for Lynch, Forest are on very good form. Danny Collins was an unused substitute for Forest.

Emyr Huws kept his place in Birmingham City’s starting line-up, but found himself on the losing side for the first time when their visit to Watford ended in a 1-0 defeat. Huws created numerous chances from set plays and was named by Birmingham manager Lee Clark as their stand-out performer.

Tom Lawrence made his first start for Yeovil Town in their 1-1 draw with Millwall and came close to grabbing a winner, but Millwall keeper David Forde (Irish, unfortunately) made a brilliant save. Steve Morison, who started the match, scored Millwall’s equaliser three minutes after Jermaine Easter came off the bench.

Sam Vokes scored the only goal as Burnley beat local rivals Bolton Wanderers 1-0 away, extending his team’s unbeaten run to eight matches with his 16th goal of the season. Vokes scored a tap-in shortly after a left-footed drive from the eligible David Jones was palmed away by the Bolton keeper.

    League One

Lloyd James was on the bench for the first time since mid-November as Leyton Orient lost their third match in a row at home to Bristol City. Bristol City’s 3-1 win moved them out of the relegation zone. Wes Burns, who made his first start for City at the weekend, was an unused substitute in this match.

    League Two

Kaid Mohamed played 90 minutes for Bristol Rovers in their 1-0 home victory over Cheltenham Town. Ellis Harrison made an appearance in the 88th minute. Troy Brown was in defence for Cheltenham, while Connor Roberts and loanee Lee Lucas were both unused substitutes.

Billy Bodin played just 21 minutes for Torquay United before being replaced due to injury. It wasn’t good news for Torquay, who were already 2-0 down at home to bottom club Northampton Town. The match finished 2-1 to the away side. Torquay are two points from safety – and just three points ahead of Northampton.

Chris Maxwell made his long-awaited Fleetwood Town debut when they travelled to Wycombe Wanderers. The match finished 1-1, but Maxwell distinguished himself with some fine saves. Fleetwood are only two points behind the automatic promotion places
