    Midweek round up - 2-4th April 2014

Midweek player round up from Sophie Beresford.

    Champions League

Ryan Giggs started for Manchester United in their semi-final first leg, but had to be replaced at half-time with a groin injury. Somehow, Man Utd managed to hold Bayern Munich to a 1-1 draw. The English team took the lead early in the second half through departing captain Nemanja Vidic, but Bayern’s away goal gives them the advantage for the away leg – or one more advantage, I should say.

Gareth Bale made it three goals in two matches as Real Madrid beat Borussia Dortumund 3-0 at home. Bale gave Real the lead in the 3rd minute when he sprinted past the defence to receive the ball from a team-mate. Bale continued to cause trouble with his free kicks and a flick from eight yards, but he was unable to add to his five goals and three assists in eight Champions League matches.

    Championship

Rhoys Wiggins played in defence for Charlton Athletic as they moved three points clear of the drop zone. With two more games in hand to play, survival looks more than possible. Here, they took advantage of the financially-troubled Leeds with a 1-0 away victory.

Andy King started for the first time since early January and scored his first goal since early December – an equaliser just before half-time in a 2-2 away draw at Wigan Athletic. Jack Collison made his second start for Wigan and very nearly opened the scoring in the 25th minute, but his shot was blocked.

    League One

Joe Walsh came close to adding to his 5 goals for Crawley Town, but his header from a corner was just wide. Crawley lost 2-1 at Port Vale and are still in the unique position of being in both the play-off and relegation battles. Crawley nearly took the lead in the 16th minute, but Richard Duffy somehow cleared the shot off the line.

Kieron Freeman received a red card and conceded a penalty in Sheffield United’s home match against Brentford, but the referee then took the unprecedented step of asking his assistant for help. Freeman’s red card was rescinded, the penalty was replaced with a drop ball, and Sheffield Utd went on to become the latest team to take points off second-placed Brentford, with a 0-0 draw. Ben Davies also started for the Blades.

Sam Ricketts helped Wolverhampton Wanderers to keep a clean sheet, but unfortunately for them, Stevenage did exactly the same thing and away side Wolves had to be content with a point. Dave Edwards also kept his place in Wolves’ starting line-up and really should have scored following a defensive error; Lee Evans was a 73rd-minute substitute. Sam Wedgbury was an unused substitute for Stevenage.

Lloyd Isgrove was a 73rd-minute substitute for Peterborough United as they celebrated their Johnstone’s Paint Trophy win over Chesterfield with a 2-0 league victory over Colchester United. This victory moves Peterborough four points clear of the teams just outside the play-offs.

    League Two

Kaid Mohamed scored for Bristol Rovers in his second consecutive match, but it was opponents Bury who claimed a 2-1 home draw. Craig Jones and Daniel Nardiello both started for the winning side. Ellis Harrison was an unused substitute, despite setting up and scoring goals as a substitute in both his previous matches.
