Round up - Easter April 2014

    Round up.
Player round up from Sophie Beresford.

    Champions League

Gareth Bale was a substitute after suffering a bout of flu, but he still looked like a threat came off the bench in the 73rd minute of Real Madrid’s 1-0 home win over Bayern Munich. Bayern dominated the match but couldn’t score, leaving Madrid with the advantage going into the second leg.

    Premier League

Boaz Myhill was an unused substitute as West Bromwich Albion lost 3-1 at Manchester City. West Brom are three points clear of the relegation zone with a game in hand. They nearly equalised with the score at 1-0, but the effort was ruled out for offside.

    Championship

Emyr Huws played 90 minutes for Birmingham City, who lost 4-2 at home to Blackburn Rovers. Birmingham are winless in their last 16 games at home, a run that has seen them become possible relegation candidates – they’re only outside the bottom three on goal difference.

David Jones played the full match as Burnley confirmed promotion with a 2-0 victory over Wigan – the club who released Jones in the summer. Loanee Jack Collison returned to the starting line-up for Wigan, who need four points from their last two games to guarantee a place in the play-offs. Burnley’s Sam Vokes missed the match due to a serious knee injury, but his strike partner Danny Ings made a point of mentioning Vokes’ ‘top class’ contribution as he and his team-mates celebrated their return to the top flight.

Lewin Nyatanga returned to Barnsley’s starting line-up for their visit to Derby County, the club with whom Nyatanga began his career. It was his former club who took the points in a 2-1 win, but Barnsley continued to fight right to the end, with Nyatanga setting up Barnsley’s goal with a headed pass in the 80th minute, seconds before his team-mate Luke Steele saved a penalty. Barnsley are four points from safety with the worst goal difference in the Championship.

Jonny Williams started for Ipswich Town, who missed the chance to go into the play-off places following a 2-2 draw at home to Bournemouth. Shaun MacDonald was an unused substitute for Bournemouth, who are three points away from the play-offs despite the draw.

Steve Morison and Jermaine Easter made substitute appearances for Millwall, who drew 0-0 at home to relegation rivals Doncaster Rovers. While Millwall’s away form of three straight wins has seen them haul themselves out of the bottom three, they are winless in nine at home. David Cotterill played the full match for Doncaster. Both clubs are a point outside the relegation zone.

Morgan Fox continued his good work in Charlton Athletic’s defence as they won 2-3 at Sheffield Wednesday. Simon Church also started, but was unsuccessful in his search for a first league goal since November. Charlton are only two points clear of danger, but they still have a game in hand.

Tom Lawrence scored from a free kick in the 73rd minute for Yeovil Town, but although the Manchester United loanee looked dangerous, he was unable to take advantage of a defensive mix-up and had a strong penalty appeal waved away. Yeovil’s hopes of a point were destroyed when Huddersfield Town scored deep into stoppage time to secure their first win in eleven matches. The 2-1 home defeat leaves Yeovil almost certainly relegated – six points adrift with two games to go and severe issues in the goal difference department.

Danny Collins and David Vaughan kept their places in Nottingham Forest’s starting line-up as they beat Leeds United 2-0 away. This was Forest’s first away win since February and they are just a point outside the play-off places , despite a recent run of eleven matches without a win.

On Tuesday, Andy King made his fourth start in six matches as Leicester City won the Championship title with 1-0 away win against Bolton Wanderers. King went close early on as Leicester won their 13th away match of the season. Having achieved promotion and the title, their next goal is to get 100 points – they’re on 96 points now with two games remaining.

Chris Gunter played 90 minutes for Reading in their 2-0 home win over Middlesbrough, which puts them in pole position for the final play-off spot. Hal Robson-Kanu also started for Reading, but he left the field after 29 minutes with a very bloody nose. This was only Reading’s second win in seven matches.

    League One

Dave Edwards got the winning assist in stoppage time as Wolverhampton Wanderers won the League One title with a 3-1 away victory over Leyton Orient (and a bit of help from Milton Keynes Dons). Sam Ricketts was also in the starting line-up for Wolves, while Lee Evans was an 83rd-minute substitute. Orient’s Lloyd James was back on the bench but appeared on 75 minutes.

Billy Waters came off the bench just before the hour mark as Crewe Alexandra drew 0-0 at home to Colchester United. Both teams now have 47 points and are just one point above the drop zone, though Colchester have a significantly better goal difference. Sanchez Watt played 85 minutes for Colchester despite his injury problems; George Ray was an unused substitute for Crewe.

James Loveridge was a 67th-minute substitute for Milton Keynes Dons, who scored a stoppage time equaliser, giving themselves a 2-2 home draw against promoted Brentford. This draw handed the title to Wolverhampton Wanderers and gave MK Dons their first home win - and first home goals - since 15th February.

Gwion Edwards nearly made it two goals in two appearances for Crawley Town, but he was denied by an outstanding save against Notts County. Despite other chances, Crawley found themselves on the losing side with Notts County taking the points in a 1-0 home win. Joe Walsh also started for Crawley. Gareth Roberts was an unused substitute for County, who are a point from safety.

James Wilson played in defence for Oldham Athletic as they drew 0-0 at home to Coventry City. Oldham are unbeaten in seven and three points will ensure they spend another season in the third tier. Mathematically, Coventry need four points to be sure of safety, but realistically, three will be enough.

Lloyd Isgrove made his first start for Peterborough United in a 4-1 home victory over Carlisle United. Peterborough are four points clear of seventh place, but while they have won their last four home games, they have also lost their last three away games in the league.

Tom Bradshaw was promoted to Shrewsbury Town’s starting line-up following his supersub goal against Crewe Alexandra, but was replaced at half-time as home side Preston North End won 5-2. Joe Jacobson also started for Shrewsbury and is one of two players cited as having conceded a penalty, while half-time substitute and former Preston man Paul Parry set up Shrewsbury’s second goal in the 81st minute. Craig Davies started for Preston. Mathematically, Shrewsbury could survive. Realistically, they’re six points from safety and going down.

Craig Morgan and Nicky Adams started for Rotherham United, who managed to beat Port Vale 1-0 at home despite being a man light for the whole of the second half. Rotherham are unbeaten in ten home games. Port Vale are winless in seven away games, but it’s been a successful return to League One: they’re ninth. Richard Duffy played 51 minutes for Port Vale.

Michael Doughty and Sam Wedgbury were recalled to Stevenage’s starting line-up for their home match against Bristol City, which saw a number of Stevenage youngsters make their debuts. Stevenage lost 3-1, a result that confirmed their relegation to League Two. Wes Burns and Dave Richards were unused substitutes for Bristol City.

Owain Fôn Williams was on hand literally and figuratively to deny Sheffield United a late away win, but while a 0-0 home draw does keep Tranmere Rovers out of the relegation zone, they’re only a point ahead. Ash Taylor and Jake Cassidy also started for Tranmere. Ben Davies started for Sheff Utd with Kieron Freeman a 69th-minute substitute.

    League Two

A Kaid Mohamed goal put home side Bristol Rovers ahead in the 19th minute, but title contenders Rochdale came from behind to claim a 2-1 victory. This was Rovers’ second game in 48 hours and it showed. The ‘out of favour’ Ellis Harrison wasn’t in the squad, with several other Rovers youngsters selected ahead of him.

Nathan Craig was given a surprise start for Torquay United when they visited local rivals Exeter City. However, Exeter took an early lead, and despite some good work down the left flank, Craig was taken off at half-time. Torquay came from behind to seal a 2-1 victory and keep their wild dreams of survival alive for a few more days. Exeter’s lively forward Eliot Richards was denied a very late equaliser by a great save,

Chris Maxwell played in goal for Fleetwood Town, who must have been just a little bit worried when they went down to 10 men in the 12th minute. But that didn’t stop Fleetwood from getting a 1-0 home victory over Wycombe Wanderers, who are now only outside the bottom two on goal difference. BBC Sport says Maxwell came close to scoring for Wycombe. Mistaken identity in football is becoming quite a trend.

Troy Brown helped Cheltenham Town to keep a clean sheet as a 2-0 away win over Mansfield Town ensured they’d be playing League Two football next season. Lewis Price was in goal for Mansfield, who were unbeaten in seven prior to this match. Connor Roberts was on the bench for Cheltenham.

Darcy Blake kept his starting place but conceded a penalty – described as ‘soft’ by his own assistant manager - as Newport County drew 1-1 at home to Burton Albion. Mike Flynn also started for Newport, while Andrew Hughes and Aaron Amadi-Holloway were unused substitutes. Last season’s captain David Pipe was not in the squad, and was released by Newport just a few days later. Player-coach Tony James wasn’t in the squad to face his previous club.

Daniel Alfei returned to Portsmouth’s starting line-up as his team won 1-0 away to Northampton Town, who remain in the relegation places on goal difference. Portsmouth, who were looking like possible candidates for relegation not so long ago, have won their last five and are now ten points clear of the drop zone with two games remaining.

Darren Jones and Aaron Morris started for Wimbledon in their away match against Plymouth Argyle. Wimbledon’s 2-1 away win means they are nine points clear of the bottom two. Early predictions that Wimbledon and Dagenham & Redbridge would be departing from the Football League have proved wide of the mark, with both teams sitting in mid-table.

Christian Ribeiro was again a spectator from the bench as the league leaders beat Oxford United 1-0 at home in a stylish performance. The win means Scunthorpe’s promotion is all but assured; Oxford will need to win both their last games to have any chance of the play-offs.

Freddy Eastwood and Luke Chambers watched from the bench as Southend United beat visitors Accrington Stanley 1-0. They could technically be denied a place in the play-offs by Oxford United, but their superior goal difference makes this very unlikely. As Southend manager Phil Brown was keen to point out, this was his team’s sixth clean sheet in eight games.

Daniel Nardiello will play no part in Bury’s final two games of the season after being sent off for the second time this season. On both occasions, Nardiello received two yellows – the only yellows he’s received all season. Captain Craig Jones also started for Bury, who lost 1-0 at home to York City. York look almost certain to finish in the play-offs.
