    Young Guns update

    Young Guns by John Jones.

This week a review of players from the ’94 through ’96 birth years.

Wes Burns (Aberdeen - on loan from Bristol City)

Having had a reasonable number of minutes during Aberdeen’s Europa League qualification games, Wes started in the club’s initial SPL game of the new season. With the club eliminated from European competition, this will now be the focus of attention as Aberdeen will strive to equal or better their achievements during the last campaign. If he can excel at this level, it will show that he is very capable of performing a major role in the Championship for his parent club.

    Lee Evans (Wolverhampton Wanderers)
Lee was credited with an adequate display as he was inserted in the starting line-up for Wolves when they kicked off their season with a draw. It was his first appearance for the club in well over a season, one that he can hopefully build on in the future. Another solid performance in the midweek EFL Cup win should see him continue in the team as the club’s new ownership and management seek a return to former glories.

Ryan Hedges and Liam Shephard (Yeovil Town - on loan from Swansea City)
Both Ryan and Liam started in the League 2 opener and helped Yeovil get a good win. Having played in this and League 1 level in past seasons, now is the time for them to show they are more than comfortable in this competitive environment and perhaps have the opportunity to test their ability at an elevated level. They also played in the excellent EFL Cup win away at Walsall, although Liam did need to be substituted in the second half due to an injury.

    Adam Henley (Blackburn Rovers)
In what was an inauspicious start to the season for club and player as they suffered a heavy home defeat to begin the new season, Adam will be hoping that things look up in the weeks ahead. With Blackburn needing to use his versatility to fill the left back rather than his more favoured right sided position, he will look forward to an injury free run in the side to boost his claim for inclusion in the Wales senior squad.

    Tom Lockyer (Bristol Rovers)
In Tom’s first foray into League 1 football, he put in a customary steady defensive display even though the team eventually succumbed to defeat away to a strong show from the opposition. All being well, he will now look forward to pitting his wits against what will likely be a star studded Chelsea forward line in the next round of the EFL Cup, having played his part in thwarting the Cardiff City strike force to help his club advance.

    Declan John (Cardiff City)
Having been given the chance to rekindle his first team career at Cardiff, Declan has seemingly firmly grasped the opportunity with an assured performance in the team’s away draw to start off the season. Played reasonably well in what turned out to be 120 minutes of frustration as the club exited the EFL Cup in the first round.

    Connor Roberts (Swansea City)
After an extremely impressive season on loan in League 2 with Yeovil, Connor has been involved with the first team during their pre-season preparation. He gained some valuable experience with a reasonable amount of minutes during a number of the matches although he has not been used in the last couple of games. With a good number of players already loaned out, his main focus in the foreseeable future will likely be with the U-23 side.

George Williams (MK Dons – on loan from Fulham)
In a slightly surprising move George has been loaned out for the season to his original team, in fact making it his third spell at Stadium MK. It will almost certainly ensure plenty of game time as he attempts to progress further after a successful loan period with Gillingham in the second half of last season. If so, he will probably have involvement in the Wales senior squad as they start the World Cup qualifying campaign.

Next week the focus will be on the ’97 birth year and younger group of players.
