    Young guns blog update

Young Guns Blog by John Jones.

    David Brooks (Sheffield United)

David is now an obvious inclusion for discussion in this young guns blog having gained caps for Wales U-21 appearances in the 2 recent games that were played. It is however done with still some amount of uncertainty, possibly even intrigue in regard to how his international future may proceed. Though it was his first involvement with Wales at any level, he was similarly honoured by England when he played for them in the Toulon U-20 tournament just a few months ago. Not only did he play, he was a star performer for them as the team became eventual champions at the event. It is very understandable that they will most likely be anxious for him to pledge loyalty to them rather than Wales in such circumstances and it would not be surprising if they would further court his services. With the policy within the Wales camp one of rightfully allowing a player the freedom of choice in his commitment without any undue pressure, it does very much leave the door open to multiple avenues of choice. With such a subject having been one that has gathered momentum in the past year or so and in particular has reached a crescendo in the media with recent events, it has become one of widely commented opinions. With a debate that is projected from an English perspective that implies Wales resorts to foul means in currying favour with these young boys, I am sure it antagonizes those who become interested having only been subjected to those versions of the processes in place.

As one who is admittedly passionate in a wish for every Welsh success possible on the football field, I cannot guarantee a complete impartiality in my comments. I would hope however that there is no temptation for me to resort to only using very selected facts in order to pronounce an almost inflammatorily biased version that has been verbally or in printed form espoused in a few cases in the forum that has developed. My only addition to this, is one that can safely say that even if an English person feels aggrieved by these outcomes, statistics remain still very much in their favour in terms of numerical advantage. Though one can always use inevitable exceptions to counter even what seems the most logical of proposals, superior numbers generally produce positive outcomes in any form of competition. Whether it is at schoolboy, youth or in the professional level of the game England has at least a 10 to I ratio in terms of available options, that, I believe being a very conservative estimation. Further dissemination could allow me to write even more, but no matter what, unless a person is going to look at the facts with as an unbiased perspective as they can, no amount of persuasive rhetoric is going to win the disagreement. What I can maybe possibly point out to the English is, that unfortunately for us Welsh, you will hold the upper hand most if not all times. Maybe we should concede that the Welsh set up has outwitted the English set up of late, having coopted what are projected to be very good future players into the "Welsh Way", one that they have found themselves enjoying being a part of. Even so, England should have still identified and developed gems of their own in greater abundance, from the much larger pool that still remained in place for them. Using the compassion that I feel is part of the Welsh heritage, we should apologize for the frustration caused to England supporters by all of this.

This is really supposed to focus on David and so I will move on. He certainly caught my eye as one to be aware of in the game against Switzerland that I was able to watch. I am hoping that he will continue to feel that he has enough Welshness in him to want to continue wearing the red dragon on his chest, but regardless of his eventual choice, I wish him nothing but the best of fortune no matter which avenue he decides to proceed along. His ability is in that special sort of bracket and all football lovers will undoubtedly enjoy seeing him perform.

I need to apologize as to having provided you with an abbreviated version of what possibly I had in mind as I started out for this week's issue. I'm hoping I have made comments that are worth reading when addressing the dual nationality debate. Having done so, time constraints reduced my ability to devote further effort and still have it punctually available for publication.
