    YOUNG GUNS BLOG UPDATE

Young Guns Blog by John Jones.

    Morgan Boyes (Liverpool)
Having missed a large part of the first half of the season through injury, Morgan has been making up for that lost time by being regularly included in Liverpool’s U-18 team once he regained full fitness. A defender, capable of playing on the left flank or centrally, he will I am sure be an integral part of that team next season as he continues his time as a scholar with the club. It is quite a feather in his cap to be so heavily involved as a first year scholar, Liverpool, as do other top clubs, have a large intake into their development system each year and so there is no shortage of competition for places in the team. The afore mentioned injury situation prevented Morgan from taking part in the autumn matches played by the Wales U-17 team, since that time he now moves on to U-19 eligibility. He was in the squad that attended the recent training camp in Croatia and in fact captained the team in one of the 2 games played against the host nation as preparation for next season’s European qualifying matches. Though somewhat abbreviated, Morgan will still most probably feel satisfaction when assessing how things have progressed this season. There is the potential for the next one to be an even more exciting period in his life, not only U-18 club football but also U-19 against European sides will be a strong possibility for him to experience. At some point along it, there may also be U-23 competitive action as coaches try and prepare second year scholars for what will be the next step in their careers. For this to happen, the quality of his play must not only be very good, but he will also need dogged determination and discipline to find a means of improving his skills to better those more imposing opponents whom he will encounter in a path toward a successful career. Achievement of such will gain an admiration from both club and country fans.

Cameron Coxe and Mark Harris (Cardiff City)

These two young men have amassed appearances as regular members of the Cardiff U-23 team throughout the season and must be hoping that first team football is an ever-closer occasion that will be experienced by them. Mark has in fact had a brief exposure when making a couple of appearances in the late stages of last season after being on the bench numerous times in previous matches. He was also on the bench for an FA Cup match this season. They are both in their first full season of play as full time professionals and as such are relatively young in terms of developing a productive career. Unfortunately, gaining exposure to competitive first team environment circumstances is the only way they can fully appreciate what the demands of surviving such an examination poses. It will also give them as a measure of what skills they need to possess and refine. With Cardiff aiming for a season conclusion that includes a resulting promotion, it is understandable that any opportunities are severely limited by the size of the squad along with the experienced campaigners who are members of it. Producing players from the development system which benefit the club is the obvious aim of Cardiff and all other clubs. Although the staff must believe that these two have a quality that can attain that desire, the onus is very much on them to prove their worthiness in deserving that next step and work to their utmost capability to ensure they get the best opportunity to do so.

Rollin Menayese (Bristol Rovers – on loan at Swindon Town)
The arrangement that secured the loan assignment for Rollin at the end of the January transfer window would seem to be one that has been pleasing to all parties concerned. Rollin has gathered quite an amount of first team experience as he was immediately inserted into the starting line up at Swindon, playing in a long string of consecutive games. It will certainly have benefitted him to have done so, in that time also helping Swindon’s attempt to gain a place in the League 2 play off spots before the season concludes. His parent club will also be delighted with his ability to operate effectively at one level below the one in which their first team is placed. There will be a strong expectancy that Rollin will not only return to pre-season training as a member of the first team squad but could well be a viable contender for a starting role in the team. After a short period in non-league football, the return into the Football League was one that Rollin appears to have fully capitalized on, with appearances for the Rovers first team on occasion earlier in the season added on to these more recent events. A continuation in the development of his game may well provide him a productive career and regular first team football next season would certainly boost the chances of selection for the Wales U-21 squad.

    Momodou Touray (Newport County)
The recent announcement by Newport of the offer and acceptance of professional contracts by Momodou and his team mate Jay Foulston, who was featured in the young guns blog a couple of weeks ago, is news that both can be congratulated for their achievement. Momodou came to the attention of an increased number of Wales fans through his selection for the national U-19 squad and good performances in the European qualifying games for that age group. He had come to the notice of selectors after the receipt of praise when loaned out to Merthyr Town in the early part of the season. A couple of months ago, his name once again came to the fore, when invited and spending two weeks involved with the Leicester U-23 team on a work experience loan. Next season will be one these two young men can look forward to with an anticipation that first team football is within reach. It will be by no means an easy task for them to do so on a regular basis, as the challenges they face will require a determined attitude. They have obviously been diligent in improving their skills to have reached this point and yet they have to find a means to push even harder to compete against the abilities of those already experienced in what it takes to be successful in the Football League. The Newport staff and fans will be delighted if they can become dedicated in achieving those goals.
