    YOUNG GUNS BLOG UPDATE

Young Guns Blog by John Jones.

    Nathan Broadhead (Everton)
Last season was certainly a significant time for Nathan as he made his first team debut for Everton. Though the game in which he appeared was considered of lesser importance by the club as they tried to find a balance in the demands on their playing personnel, it only slightly diminishes the achievement. Even with no regular first team members being involved, there was still a large pool of good contenders for selection and so very much a noteworthy occasion, making Nathan deserving of a congratulatory acknowledgement. With that step achieved, Nathan will I am sure be aiming to add further minutes representing his club’s senior team as soon as possible. Maybe best described as a very skillful and busy player, his goal scoring record from his time as a schoolboy up to the present is very much a strong part of his repertoire. The challenge in order to continue his progression will be to maintain this reputation when he is confronted by a higher class of opponents. Those who find a resolution to such a hurdle to overcome in their development, focus the maximum of both their physical and mental abilities to adjust to the new demands. A regular member of the U-23 team at this time, it does seem that Nathan has qualities that will eventually see him achieve a successful professional career, whether it will be at Everton or elsewhere remains to be determined.

    Cameron Coxe (Cardiff City)
Cameron has represented Wales throughout his career and is presently doing so at U-21 level having been a regular member of that team over the past couple of seasons. At club level he is in his second season as a regular selection for the U-23 side as he had previously been for the U-18 team during his youth tenure at Cardiff. His appearance on the bench for the EFL Cup match, gives an indication that management staff are satisfied that he is progressing along a path toward first team involvement, although any suggestion that it may be imminent is very unlikely. With a quality and willingness to be both a determined defender and having an eye toward assisting in attacking play whenever possible, he is prototypical of what coaches admire as wing back members of a team in present day football. A continued improvement of skills along with a growing amount of experience against challenging opponents will create an expectancy of him eventually gaining an opportunity to grace the field as a member of the first team at the Cardiff City Stadium.

    Liam Cullen (Swansea City)

There is evidence aplenty for young professional players at the Liberty Stadium club to take encouragement from the present philosophy of the management team at the club. No matter what age and accumulated experience, if the quality of play is deemed sufficiently adept, an opportunity to be part of matchday squads and first team members is available. Scoring goals throughout the years of development is a facet of Liam’s play that has propelled him to the present stage of his career. Honing his ability to do so against highly skilled defenders that are selected for first team duty is the next requisite for him to display, this would almost certainly give him a chance to represent his hometown club at senior level. He is I am sure, well aware of the possibilities and will be striving with a focused effort to realize what has to be the dream possessed for years by himself and his peers. He has answered all the questions posed to him to this point in his football life, now comes the biggest step forward for him to overcome. A determined and dedicated effort will hopefully see him do so in successful fashion in the future.

    Pablo Martinez (West Bromwich Albion)

As the second season of his time as a scholar with West Brom progresses, it is expected that Pablo will find himself increasingly involved in the club’s Premier League 2 matches so that he can both be tested and gain experience in U-23 competition. He has already had a small amount of exposure to such circumstances, doing so a few times last season. Presently the defensive lynchpin in the U-18 side which he captains, he is I am sure working diligently to secure a full-time professional contract in order to prolong his career in football. Having already represented Wales at U-17 level, he has now moved along to doing so at U-19’s and will almost certainly be a member of the squad that is selected for the European qualification matches for that age group to be played in a few weeks time.

    Ben Williams (Barnsley)
Given the chance to continue his association with a Football League club when Barnsley offered him a contract after a successful trial period with them prior to the start of last season, Ben is now becoming established at the club. He took every advantage not to waste such an opportunity by working hard enough to regularly appear in their U-23 side as well as gaining playing time as part of their Checkatrade Trophy teams. This season he has performed well enough to place himself in contention for first team involvement in League 1 play as his appearances on the bench for the team signify. A wing back who can also operate as a wide midfielder if required, a versatility that can be used by management should it be desired, this is another trait that bodes well in his future career progression. Although listed as a standby candidate for the U-19’s last season, Ben has not represented Wales since doing so as a schoolboy. This statistic is very likely to change with a continuation of the progress he is achieving. It would be expected for him to become a strong candidate for U-21 squad involvement in the future.
