    YOUNG GUNS BLOG UPDATE

Young Guns Blog by John Jones.

Aaron Collins (Wolverhampton Wanderers – on loan at Colchester United)
On a season long loan assignment at Colchester, Aaron has not as yet played a large amount of first team minutes for the club, the majority of the time being spent on the bench with substitution appearances in some matches. The south coast club is the latest in a good number of clubs that he has spent time away from Molineux since his move to them almost 3 years ago. It has certainly not gone as Aaron would have wished after Wolves moved quickly to sign him, a consequence of him making quite an impression on many with his performances for Newport. His arrival at Wolves coincided with an upturn in fortunes at the club. The financial investment accelerated their climb to the Premier League with the acquisition of high value players, their arrival there then supplemented by further purchases. This makes it increasingly difficult for young players to be given opportunities. Another factor was the success of the development system in producing a high number of good young players. As with Aaron, many of them are loaned for the season now that the playing staff at the club has significantly burgeoned.

Keston Davies (Swansea City – on loan at Notts County)
Called up as a replacement for the recent Wales U-21 game, Keston’s international debut at that level assisted the team to a good win as they completed the qualifying set of games in the Uefa tournament. He has been a part of the development squad at Swansea for the last four seasons and in fact was the captain of the U-23 team in the season when they were promoted into the top division of that format. Now on a season long loan at Notts County and though regularly on the bench, has not been utilized on the field by the team so far. Hopefully in time he will get the chance to get some first team experience to add to some amount that he saw when on loan at Yeovil for the first half of last season.

Connor Lemonheigh Evans (Bristol City – on loan at Torquay United)
Making his first team debut for City in last season’s FA Cup tie was an indication that Connor is certainly a valued young player at the Ashton Gate club. Scoring a couple of goals when wearing the Wales U-21 shirt recently, also showed that he has admirable qualities. He is now once again at Torquay, building up valuable first team experience as he tries to prepare himself to be capable of stepping up from development football and be considered for further first team minutes at his parent club or maybe on loan elsewhere in the Football League.

    Tom Lowery (Crewe Alexandra)

This season has not gone as well as the last, at least in statistical terms for Tom. His time with the first team has mostly been as a bench player whereas he had accumulated many playing time minutes in the previous season. He is however very much valued at Crewe as is signified by the long term contract he agreed with them. This does allow for some amount of time for an upturn in fortunes without an added pressure of an imminent deadline on the horizon. Hopefully we will soon see his name regularly appear as an on field player for the team.

Daniel Mooney (Fleetwood Town – on loan at Chester)
I, along with most other Wales fans first became aware of Dan when he was named in the Wales U-19 squad last season and played in quite a few games for the team. In what was his first season as a full time professional, he spent part of it out on loan. He did well enough for Fleetwood to extend his contract with them and this season he is loaned out to Chester. He is playing regularly for the team and has contributed with some goals for them as well as his general play. In early October he made his first team debut for his parent club as he started in a Checkatrade Trophy match for them.

Momodou Touray (Newport County – on loan at Barry Town)
Signing a professional contract prior to the start of last season, Momodou continued to impress those at Newport with his play in some of the pre-season games. Loaned out to Merthyr Town a few weeks later, his performances for them resulted in his selection for the Wales U-19 team. After quite a few appearances on the bench in the second half of the season, he made his first team debut for County in the last match of the season. This season he has been loaned out to Barry Town and he has again caught the eye with his performances in the WPL. His call up as a replacement player for the recent Wales U-21 squad showed that he was not only getting notice at club level but also in the national selection process.
