WALES INTERNATIONAL FOOTBALL YOUNG GUNS BLOG

Latest Young guns blog by John Jones

Luke Burton (Shrewsbury Town) Goalkeeper, born 2001
A decision by Luke electing to represent the Wales schoolboy team was viewed as a positive reflection on the attributes of the system employed in the development of young players. England had also expressed an interest in possibly selecting him and so he had to make the choice. He collected a number of caps playing in Victory Shield and then the following season, U-17 international games, before starting his time as a scholar with Shrewsbury in the summer of 2018. Apparently, he has not been available to play for much of the intervening period, spending most of the earlier months of this season regaining his fitness. He had returned to playing in recent weeks. Hopefully, the future will be better for him and in time the quality of his talent will again shine brightly.

Connor Davies and Jac Davies (Cardiff City) Defenders, born 2001
Over the last three seasons prior to this one, both Connor and Jac played on a regular basis for the Cardiff U-18 team. Even in the first of those, when they were affiliated as schoolboys, they both accumulated double digit appearances. Jac is a member of the U-23 squad this season and has made a few appearances for the team. I believe Connor has also been retained by the club, though not included on their website as a member of the U-23 squad, he has made one substitute appearance for that team earlier in the season. The only other information I have been able to see about him, was again on the club website, indicating he was on loan at Weston-Super-Mare at that time. I apologize for being vague in knowledge of their recent circumstances.

Corey Glaves (Sheffield Wednesday) Midfielder, born 2002
Corey is a first year scholar with Wednesday this season. He appeared on the bench for the U-18 team last season and this season he has played for the team a couple of times. He will be determined to secure more playing time when he moves into the second year of his time as a scholar. In 2017 he was selected in a squad that represented Wales when the team played in a U-15 international game.

James Holmes (MK Dons) Forward, born 2002
James has been associated with the Dons for a number of years, progressing through the academy teams. This season has been his first as a scholar with the club and has been playing regularly for their U-18 team as well as being involved with the U-23 development team on some occasions. He played in his first game for Wales in a U-16 international match and the following season was selected to represent the nation at U-17 level.

Joe Jeremiah Defender, born 2003, Dylan Morgan Midfielder, born 2002 (Forest Green Rovers)
Both Joe and Dylan have been first year scholars with Rovers this season and have played for the club's U-18 team. From what I have been able to discern, Dylan has seemingly appeared regularly, but I do not know the frequency of Joe's inclusion in the team. They have had involvement with the national squads as schoolboys, Dylan was selected in a squad when his age group competed in a U-15 international match. I did see that Joe was included in the Cymru Cup squads for the 2003 group and may well have had other occasions at a national level that I am not aware of.

Michael Murphy Forward, born 2002, Cian Williams Defender, born 2003 (Swansea City)
Michael is a first year scholar with Swansea after having previously been associated with their academy for a few years. He has made a couple of starting appearances along with a few off the bench for the U-18 team this season. Cian joined Swansea from Wrexham in the latter months of last year. He had to wait until the new year for it to be completed as it was an inter association transfer. Since that time, he played in quite a few games for the U-18 team. I was not aware of his birthdate until very recently and had wrongly assumed that he signed on schoolboy terms. I now know that he was eligible to sign on as a scholar and presume that he did in fact do so. Cian has been a regular member of the Wales U-17 squad this season after having also played in schoolboy internationals for the nation.
