    Young Guns update

    Young Guns by John Jones.

This week some players that are likely to be unfamiliar too many followers of Wales teams.

    Mitchell Clark (Aston Villa)
Although still with eligibility to play in the Villa U-18 side, the club seem to prefer to use Mitchell in their U-23 team of which he is regular member. This indicates a high regard the management team has for his talent as well as a confidence that he can cope with a higher level of football than most in his age group. He is scheduled to be part of the national U-19 squad playing a couple of friendly matches at the coming weekend. I have mentioned some other members of the squad in preceding weeks and this suggests a very strong group will contest the qualifying group of the European U-19 tourney later on this year.

    Kyle Copp (Yeovil Town)
After a successful trial period during the pre-season, Kyle was offered non contract terms by the club which was accepted. As he was previously with Swansea City, international clearance had to be obtained in order to complete his registration. With this duly completed a few days previously, Kyle was then included in the match-day squad this past weekend. Although an unused substitute for that game, it would seem that he will be given every opportunity to impress and in doing so could possibly earn himself an improved contract at the club.

    Aron Davies (Fulham)
As he progressed toward the end of his youth team eligibility last season, Aron was increasingly used in what was at that time the U-21 team. This season he is an important member of the corresponding team as the club plays in the newly formatted U-23 league. The signs are encouraging that Aron may be another of the exciting young players that Fulham have produced of late although if so, some credit would also go to Bristol City, the club from which he was signed part way through the scholar phase of his football development.

    Ellis Harrison (Bristol Rovers)
After making his first team debut as an impressive 17 year old first year scholar at the club, Ellis is by now moving steadily toward a century of Football League appearances which should occur toward this season’s conclusion all being well. Added to this are a season where he was only a few games short of being an ever present in the team which spent that period in the Conference. His contribution at that time was quite significant as this was by far his most prolific goal scoring period at Memorial Stadium and played its part in regaining Football League status. Ellis has been a constant member of the Wales U-21 squad over the last couple of years, also accumulating a good deal of playing time for the team during that time.

    Brandon Oddy (Norwich City)
Having signed on as a first year scholar in the summer, Brandon is now a member of the Norwich U-18 team and has already secured significant playing time with them. It is not all that unusual for a first year scholar to find himself involved with a club’s youth team but does suggest a higher level of talent when they do. In the case of Norwich, the academy program has been one of very good quality in the recent past and the U-18 team has had quite an amount of success the last couple of years, an indication of a deep amount of talent recruited by the club. With this in mind, Brandon’s progress can possibly be considered something well above the ordinary. Brandon was a member of the Wales U-17 team that played two friendly matches last weekend and scored in one of the games. A few months too old to be eligible for Wales U-17 this season, Fergal Hale-Brown is also both a first year scholar and the goalkeeper of choice for the U-18 team at Norwich.

We are now in the international break period which not only means no Premier League games at this time but likewise for the development league U-23 and U-18 matches. Next week the focus will be on the Wales U-21 and U-19 players involved in their respective fixtures.
