    Young Guns update

    Young Guns by John Jones.

Another apology for a delay in making this latest installment of my ramblings available as well as one for what is brief in terms of names if not so much for words.

Aaron Collins (Wolverhampton Wanderers – on loan at Notts County)
Although seemingly making satisfactory progress at Wolves since his January transfer from Newport County, Aaron has been allowed to leave on a loan move until January. In view of the very recent change of ownership and management at the club, it most probably is the way that Aaron will benefit most in his near term football education. With the Wolves intent on finding their way back into the Premier League as fast as possible, the influx of new players produced a very crowded scene for limited positions. His former manager, John Sheridan, aware of his talent quickly pounced on an opportunity to bolster his squad. Something of a long preamble here, but hopefully a relevant commentary of how I regard the situation. Moving on to more importantly providing news of what this means is that Aaron has made appearances in all 5 subsequent league games. Although each time it has been in a substitute role, he has amassed a reasonable number of minutes on the field, being generally introduced at a time when there is a sufficient amount of it remaining to be a possible influence on the game. This he has done by already contributing with a couple of goals. The benefits of first team football should be what, one hopes, will propel him forward in his career and we can hopefully look forward to further positive updates as the season progresses.

    Elliot Hewitt (Notts County)
When Elliott first emerged into the spotlight with Macclesfield, he quickly made a very strong impression and a sharply upward trajectory in his career path was forecast. Ipswich were considered the beneficiaries of having successfully negotiated the transfer market in securing his signature. After what was deemed a bright start in the next chapter of his career, a change of fortune created a stalling period. Only a rather sketchy knowledge of the events that transpired leave an explanation that untimely injuries along with a possible loss of confidence had some part to play in the reasoning. Lengthy loan periods with enough success of an accumulation of games played means that by this time Elliott has somewhere around a 100 league games under his belt. There was however no renewal offered at the end of his Ipswich contract and so came the need to move on. Now in his second season at Meadow Lane, he was an integral part of the team last season, only a few games short of being an ever present. This season has seen him miss quite a few games already, but he was on the field for the entire match as County gained an impressive away win and are now amongst the promotion candidates after a lethargic start to the season. Hopefully, Elliot can continue to add significant game time at League 2 level and eventually find a path toward the loftier levels of the game that he seemed at one time destined for.

Tom Lawrence (Leicester City on loan at Ipswich Town)
The fact that it seems that Tom has secured a regular starting assignment with Ipswich comes as little surprise to most observers of his career thus far. On a number of previous occasions, he has shown that he is quite an adept talent at Championship level and it is good to see him get first team football game time once more. As he has progressed through the various levels toward first team football, Tom has predominantly played in an attacking midfield role and has generally contributed with a good number of goals along the way, one facet of the game that has not been so prominent in of late. Undoubtedly his skills and performances have been very valued by the teams as he continues to tot up appearances and is by no means to be construed as a criticism. It is just a suggestion that a return to such statistics would signify that his game has stepped up another notch. Already an important member of the Wales senior squad, it is quite possible that he will be adding to the amount of appearances for the national team in the months ahead. For players in the more forward positions in a team, the habit of scoring is one that adds some extra confidence in their overall game. Not only would that be a boost for Tom on a personal level, but would likely give the Wales team an added dimension.
