UEFA
ruled that there will be nine qualifying
groups for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
They will be split into eight groups
of six teams and one group of five teams.
The nine group winners will qualify automatically
for the finals, while the eight best second-placed
teams will contest home and away play-offs
to decide who takes the remaining four European
places.
The World Cup qualifying
draw which takes place in Durban on 23 November.
The seedings are calculated on the basis
of qualifying results achieved in the two
previous major international tournaments,
in this case the 2006 World Cup and the
current Euro 2008 campaign. |
