The visitors were 1-0 up at half time courtesy of an excellent finish by Semshov after being put through by Arshavin on 36 minutes. Wales started the brighter of the two teams in the second half and deservedly levelled when on 54 minutes James Collins flicked in Craig Bellamy corner at the near post.

David Edwards had a glorious chance mid way through the second half to give Wales lead, but Russian keeper Akinfeev saved well. Against the run of play Russia took the lead on 71 minutes when Ignashevich miss hit free kick on the edge of the box somehow found the bottom corner.

As Wales pressed for an equaliser late on, substitute Pavlyuchenko earned Russia the three points with an excellent left foot finish.
