Friendly International :- Qatar v Wales

Match Report
A satisfactory performance by Wales in this friendly in Doha. Mark Hughes experimented with 3-6-1 formation, with Mark Delaney and Darren Barnard playing as wing-backs. Matthew Jones winning his first full cap played in a holding midfield role with Gary Speed and John Robinson pushing on to support Nathan Blake upfront.

The only goal of the game came from John Robinson, who ran onto a Gary Speed header to score on the half volley after 10 mins. Matthew Jones came close with a left-foot drive just before the interval.

In the second half Gary Speed had several chances while Nathan Blake came close on one occasion. Again several defensive frailties appeared early on, but Qatar rarely threatened Paul Jones in goal.
Key moments
First half
10 mins: Paul Jones' long goal kick was headed on by Gary Speed on the edge of the Qatar box, John Robinson arrived at full speed to half volley a fine drive past Ahmed.
28 mins Aaziz broke clear while Alenazi was trotting back from an offside position. He was still offside when he turned to chase back into the box and volley the cross over the bar.
33 mins: Gary Speed met a Barnard corner, but his header flashed over the bar.
36 mins: A John Robinson shot on the near post after good work from Nathan Blake and Darren Barnard down the left.
40 mins: A John Robinson's cross from the right was punched out by Khalil, it fell at the feet of Matthew Jones who ripped a 20 yard shot towards goal, forcing Khalil into a diving save near his left-hand post.
Half time score 0-1
Second half
47 mins: Nathan Blake stole the ball on the edge of the box, only to see his flick saved by Khalil.
62 mins: Nathan Blake flashed a shot over the bar from a John Robinson corner.
76 mins: Gary Speed rose at the far post to head a John Robinson cross wide.
83 mins Gary Speed was totally unmarked to reach a John Robinson lob, but his header was scrambled wide of the post by substitute keeper Alkaobi
