A satisfactory performance by Wales in this friendly in Doha. Mark Hughes experimented with 3-6-1 formation, with Mark Delaney and Darren Barnard playing as wing-backs. Matthew Jones winning his first full cap played in a holding midfield role with Gary Speed and John Robinson pushing on to support Nathan Blake upfront.

The only goal of the game came from John Robinson, who ran onto a Gary Speed header to score on the half volley after 10 mins. Matthew Jones came close with a left-foot drive just before the interval.

In the second half Gary Speed had several chances while Nathan Blake came close on one occasion. Again several defensive frailties appeared early on, but Qatar rarely threatened Paul Jones in goal.
