A depleted Wales squad missing eight first team regulars put up a spirited and organised performance against the team known as the Brazil of Europe in Chaves. Darren Ward earned his first cap in goal, Darren Barnard occupied the left side of midfield, and there was a welcome return up-front after injury for Craig Bellamy.

12 min: A Craig Bellamy shot from the right hit the bar and bounced out to Iwan Roberts he hooked the ball back to Gary Speed who's shot was smothered by Baia at point-blank range.
21 min: A Portugal free-kick on the edge of the box was struck firmly by Figo, it deflected off Darren Barnard and passed the wrong-footed Darren Ward into the net.
24 min: A 20-yard free kick by Gary Speed was spilled by Baia.
28 min: Baia came out of his goal and completely missed a through ball, Craig Bellamy chased only for his angled shot to be blocked.
44 min: Figo found room on the left, his low cross into the box found Sa Pinto who drove the ball home from six yards.
