The Under 21s  put-up a hard fight before being defeated 1-0 in a UEFA Under 21 Championship match in Grenoble this evening (Friday). The Wales team held a talented French side to 0-0 at half time, before a 50th minute own goal by defender Neal Eardley put them behind. The full back deflected a cross from the right past his own goalie from eight yards. Despite sending-on another attacker in Sam Vokes, the Wales youngsters were unable to get an equaliser. This was the opening game for Wales in a group that also includes Bosnia-Herzegovina, Romania and Malta. Wales will play Malta next, at the Racecourse, Wrexham on the 17th October 2007.

Wales lineup:
Owain Fon Williams (Crewe Alexandra), Neal Eardley (Oldham Athletic), Joe Jacobson Bristol Rovers), Aaron Ramsey (Cardiff City), Chris Gunter (Cardiff City), Mike Williams (Wrexham), Joe Allen (Swansea City), David Edwards (Luton Town - Capt), Ched Evans (Manchester City), David Cotterill (Wigan Athletic), Shaun MacDonald (Swansea City).

Subs: Neil Taylor (Wrexham) for MacDonald (67m), Sam Vokes (AFC Bournemouth) for Allen (67m), Lloyd James (Southampton) for Ramsey (81m). Subs Not Used: Mark Bradley (Walsall), Darcy Blake (Cardiff City), Simon Church (Reading), Rhys Taylor (Chelsea).
