Hughes hits back Mark Hughes has hit back at some critics who have blamed Wales’ defeat in Belgrade on the manager being over-cautious with his team tactics. Hughes saw his team slip to their first defeat in Group 9, with the result looking like it has handed the initiative to rivals Italy. With three qualifying games remaining Wales hold a two-point lead but have yet to confirm at least a play off place. “I don't understand people who are saying we were too cautious, I have to say I can't understand the direction of that criticism. We were playing away from home and we were playing in Serbia where there was a hostile environment.” said Hughes. Friday, August 22nd 2003.
