    WALES EURO 2020 HOPES

Defence Is Key to Wales’ Euro 2020 Hopes

In around two months, Wales will begin their Euro 2020 campaign with a tough match against Switzerland. It will, of course, be a tall order for Wales to repeat the success that led to a semi-final spot at Euro 2016, and that’s something not helped by the fact that Wales have been drawn in a very tough Group A. Joining Wales and Switzerland in Group A will be Italy and a vastly-improved Turkey. Any one of that quartet could finish on top, or bottom of Group A.

While Wales will be looking to the attacking guile of Gareth Bale and the lightning pace of Daniel James to get the goals needed to progress at the Euros, it is perhaps at the other end of the pitch where Wales’ fans should take most confidence. For want of a better term -" Wales have a mean defence. And, it could be key to success this summer at the Euros.

Wales have kept clean sheets in eight of their last 11 games. That’s an impressive run stretching back to September 2020, taking in the UEFA Nations League and recent World Cup Qualifiers. There have been two defeats in those 11 games -" to Belgium and England -" both of which saw Wales concede three goals. But, by and large, Wales have been dogged and determined in defence, and that should bode well for qualification from Group A.

Fatigue will be a big factor at Euro 2020
Three at the back seems to have worked well for caretaker boss Rob Page, with James Lawrence, Joe Rodon and Chris Mepham aided by two wing-backs, Connor Roberts and Neco Williams. Keeping that five fit will be important. Ensuring that the players are fresh after a long season is, unfortunately, out of Wales’ hands. Fatigue has been cited as a probable factor in Euro 2020, given the late start to the club season and the relentless fixture list.

Fatigue plays a physical and mental role, of course. And Wales’ defence will have to concentrate for the entire 90 minutes. If you look at football live betting markets update in real-time, for example, you will see as the games’ ebb and flow usually favours more goals later in the matches. This is reflected in the live betting odds and the overall data. Fatigue leads to mistakes, and mistakes lead to goals.

Wales odds-on to make it to the knockout phase
As for the odds of Wales making it out of Group A, the Dragons have been given odds of 5/6 by MansionBet to qualify for the knockout phases. The top two teams in the group will automatically qualify, whereas the third-placed team will go through based on the best record. Italy, as you might expect, are the betting favourites to top Group A. But this really does look like the most competitive group at the European Championships.

Wales’ overall chances are rated as 125/1 to win Euro 2020. They are among the rank outsiders, clearly. But we can measure a successful tournament by other metrics. A run to the quarter-finals would leave most fans happy enough, although everyone naturally wants more than that for their national team. Still, Wales must start with the basics, and that means keeping their excellent defensive record in place.

Turkey, Italy and Switzerland are good teams, but arguably not great ones. If you look back at Wales’ recent performances, the fans should be confident that Wales can keep their opponents’ forward lines at bay, and that will give them a firm footing into the knockout stages of Euro 2020.
