What Does the End of the Season Hold For Welsh players in English Football?

The New Saints may have run away with the Welsh Premier League, but a lot of the players who make up Wales’s national side play their football in the English league. Playing at clubs such as Tottenham Hotspur, Leeds United, Portsmouth and Ipswich Town is just too good an opportunity for them to pass up. In the leagues they play in, the football is just too fast and furious to resist, especially in the English Premier League, the most competitive league on the planet. Below is a look at what the future might hold for Welsh internationals playing in England.

    Daniel James
Daniel James has been performing well for English Championship club Leeds United. The Elland Road midfield star has put 10 in the net for his side this season. The Whites are chasing automatic promotion but are being held off a place in the top two by league leaders Leicester and Suffolk club Ipswich Town. There are only a few points in it, however, and if the team can’t raise their game that little bit higher, they’re looking at doing things the hard way and playing for promotion in the playoffs.

    Joe Rodon
Like teammate Daniel James, Joe Rodon is hoping to be playing football in the Premiership again this season. The centre back joined Leeds United in the summer on loan from Spurs and whether he stays with Leeds or returns to Spurs could hinge on whether Leeds make it into the topflight or not. Rodon has been consistent this season, missing only a couple of games, and has stayed on the pitch for the full 90 minutes in all but a couple of games.

    Ethan Ampadu
Ethan Ampadu, who became the youngest Wales player to reach 50 caps, plays in either a centre back or defensive midfield role as managers see fit and will be hoping to play Premiership football next season. The Leeds man, signed from Chelsea in 2023, is a versatile player who can also slot into a central midfield role if required. As the Rodon transfer saga rumbles on, Ampadu is reported as saying he’ll try to persuade his teammate to stay at Elland Road.

    Connor Roberts
Connor Roberts signed on loan to Leeds from defending Championship champions Burnley until the end of the 2023/24 season. The right back is on a four year deal with Burnley, which he signed on deadline day of 2021 with the club who were then in the Premier League. He’d love to finish the season by taking Leeds to the Premiership and is reported to be hopeful his move to Leeds on loan could become permanent.

    Brennan Johnson
It seems Spurs are finally beginning to come to terms with the departure of Harry Kane, who left some big boots to fill when he moved to Bayern Munich. Brennan Johnson joined Spurs for £49 million and, although it’s taken a little while, has really found his feet at the club. On the bench, he’s been lethal, having contributed to six goals after being brought on. He’s also beginning to score in the games he’s starting. Now, Johnson and the rest of the London club will be hoping to qualify for the UEFA Champions League 2024/25. It’s expected that they’ll do so. Spurs have Premier League odds of 25/1.

    Kiefer Moore
AFC Bournemouth forward Kiefer Moore joined Ipswich Town on loan until the end of the season, despite much interest from Cardiff City gaffer Erol Blut. The Portman Road club are chasing promotion to the Premier League, but have Leeds United and Southampton snapping at their heels. In 12 games, Moore has scored six times for the club and could prove decisive in the promotion chase. Ipswich will miss him when he returns to Bournemouth (if he returns, that is).

    Regan Poole
Centre back Regan Poole will be hoping his side, Portsmouth, start the next season in the Championship. The League One club have pulled away from Derby County and Bolton Wanderers, who are vying with each other for the second automatic promotion spot. Promotion isn’t in the bag yet, however. There are still several games to play, so Portsmouth need to widen the gap they’ve opened even further to leave no doubt about where they’ll be playing their football next season. Unfortunately for them, they still have to face fellow promotion chasers Bolton on 13 April, which will be a decisive clash.

For various Welsh players footballing in the English league, there’s still a lot on the line. Some might be making permanent moves to the clubs they’re playing for just now. Others might be transferring back to their clubs from spells on loan. Some may be playing in a higher tier. It’s going to be a thrilling end of the season for them and their fans.
