    KIEFFER MOORE ON THE MOVE?

Will Kieffer Moore Be On the Move in January?

The clock is ticking around to the opening of the January transfer window. Wales international striker Kieffer Moore is one player that could be on the move in the coming weeks. Transfers are nothing new to Moore, who has played for five different clubs since 2017/18. Nevertheless, none of those transfers were for negative reasons, with Moore rapidly climbing the football ladder having been plucked from relative obscurity by the then-Ipswich Town boss Mick McCarthy in a £10,000 deal from Forest Green Rovers.

An impressive 13 goals in 22 appearances during a loan spell at Rotherham earned Moore a move to Barnsley in 2018/19, where he would bag a further 21 goals in 51 games for the Tykes. Paul Cook then paid an undisclosed fee to take Moore to Wigan Athletic in 2019/20 where he notched ten goals in 36 appearances during his first full season at Championship level. That form saw him quickly snapped up by Cardiff City the following season, with the Bluebirds alerted by his 2019 call-up to the Welsh senior squad.

2020/21 was a magnificent breakthrough year for Moore at City, bagging 20 goals in 42 appearances for Neil Harris’ side as they chased a Championship playoff place. Although goals have been a little harder to come by in 2021/22 under City’s new first-time boss Steve Morison (five in 21 appearances), the 6ft 5” powerhouse is still in high demand.

The 29-year-old is a very humble character on and off the field. Considering he has only been playing in the Football League since 2017, Moore has been the hallmark of professionalism to eke every inch of desire and goals from his body. What he may lack in charisma and flair, he more than makes up through his attitude and work rate. You’d never find him mentioned in the same breath as eccentric stars like Mario Balotelli, who was more interested in making the tabloid headlines than fulfilling his undoubted potential at Manchester City, Liverpool and beyond. Balotelli’s off-pitch stunts, including driving around Manchester with £25,000 in cash sat on his front passenger seat, summed up the Italian’s personality. Yet despite lacking such bravado, Moore still has a great opportunity to play Premier League football at the peak of his powers.

Could Moore be wearing the gold and black of Wolves next month?

Premier League outfit Wolverhampton Wanderers are one club with a known interest in Moore’s services. The Black Country side, now managed by Bruno Lange, made advances for Moore just hours before the closure of the August transfer window. Their approach was knocked back by the Bluebirds, who were then managed by Mick McCarthy. City were said to have slapped a £12m price tag on Moore’s head if Wolves wanted to do a deal so late in the window ¿" a deal that would have left Cardiff very light in the final third.

Although Moore’s dream move to the top-flight didn’t materialise, there is every chance that Wanderers could return for him next month. Wolves did sign another forward to complement their front line in August in the shape of South Korean Hwang Hee-chan, but the on-loan Red Bull Leipzig ace is more of a technical player that prefers to drop deep between the lines. Moore’s physicality and unique presence would add another string to Wanderers’ bow.

The one issue which could scupper Moore’s Premier League hopes is Cardiff’s current league position. The Bluebirds are staring over their shoulders at the relegation zone after a dismal opening half to the season. It would be an enormous gamble from Steve Morison and City’s ownership to sell their star striker in such a perilous position. Nevertheless, if Morison wants to rebuild the Cardiff squad Moore is arguably the one asset that could realise substantial funds to reinvest.

From a Cardiff perspective, January represents an opportunity to bring some much-needed creativity into their squad. A new number ten is said to be at the top of Steve Morison’s priorities, which could in turn provide more goalscoring opportunities for Moore should he remain in South Wales when the window slams shut on 1st February.
