Young Guns by John Jones. This week a few of the players not mentioned in the first couple of weeks.
It should be added that the discussion topics are a result of observation of some of the words and statistics available on the internet and some assumptions, not a factual knowledge.
Gethin Jones (Everton) Â Â Â Captain of the Wales U-21’s as well as his club’s U-23 side is a testament to Gethin’s quality as a leader as well as of course being a very competent player. It will be an interesting season with regard to how it all progresses, as first team football is most likely what would best enhance his development. Almost certainly this would only happen by the instigation of a loan arrangement but Everton may not be conducive to such a scenario at present. I’m sure that as with every player, the club knows best as how to deal with his well-being and will act accordingly in his favour. The words of this writer are only very much a conjecture and done with the wish that every Welsh player can contribute to further strengthening the Wales senior squad if at all possible.Â
Tom Lawrence (Leicester City) Â Â Â This season so far, Tom has only been involved with the U-23 team at Leicester and as a result, has apparently initiated quite an interest regarding his availability on a loan basis. Not a surprising development in view of the high regard for the contributions that his former loan clubs feel they gained by having Tom in their line-up. There may however be a reluctance on Leicester’s part to allow such a deal to happen in the short term as they face a heavy schedule of games and could possibly want to keep the squad intact for now. I’m sure Tom will welcome whatever form of first team football he can get as he strives to build on the experience gained over the last couple of seasons.
Callum Saunders (Crewe Alexandra) Â Â Â Callum has amassed a reasonable number of first team appearances for the first team over the last 12 months or so although a large proportion has been in a substitute role. As was his father, he has a good goal scoring record in general. Up to this point, first team goals have eluded him but it is just a matter of time for this to change. As it is with just about every striker, experience and confidence are key contributors to success, often it is a case of the first one or two going in that then produces a regular appearance on the score sheet. Undoubtedly, Callum must be striving for continual improvement to warrant his place in the first team squad and a successful conclusion will surely follow a dedicated effort.
Jordan Williams (Liverpool) Â Â Â Jordan effectively lost the whole of last season due to a serious injury at the start of it which left him needing surgery and then a long rehabilitation period. Now he is back to full fitness and will be anxious to regain the form that saw him make his first team debut at the club in an early round League Cup tie 2 seasons ago. He is presently operating in a midfield role for the U-23 team, an area that the first team has array of talent vying for starting spots. Jordan is however very capable of filling a central defensive role and this does give him another possible option for first team recognition if he can impress the management team sufficiently.
Josh Yorwerth (Crawley Town) Â Â Â After spending a large part of last season on loan at the club, Josh joined Crawley on a permanent basis during the summer. He has started the season for them on the bench, others being preferred in his usual central defensive role. His substitute appearances have been made as a midfield replacement and he scored the game winning goal as a result in one match. The head coach waxed lyrically in his post-match comments, comparing it to one linked forever in Spurs folklore, for those of us that can refer back to more than 30 years ago, the Ricky Villa masterpiece that won them the FA Cup so dramatically. Josh has received a number of plaudits in the past in regard to his ball handling and distribution skills, so it will be interesting to see how it all develops. Â Â Â My apologies for a somewhat abbreviated piece this week, I am under some time constraints and am completing it slightly earlier than usual. Also that I am not sure how well I will be able to provide an update over the next 3 weeks as my computer accessibility will be very limited. All being well, from the latter part of September, I should be able to devote the necessary time and hope to have the regular weekly update continue throughout the season. |
