    DRAGONS IN QATAR

Three key players for Rob Page at the 2022 World Cup

Wales will step out in Qatar in what will be only our second-ever World Cup and our first since 1958. With Rob Page’s side tasting knockout action at Euro 2020, here are three key players for him to repeat that feat in this winter’s tournament.

    Daniel James
While he didn’t feature in Cymru’s memorable Euro 2016 campaign, James started every match four years later at Euro 2020. Defeat to eventual semi-finalists Denmark in the round of 16 may have put an end to our European dreams in that tournament, but the experience gained by James in that time makes him a valuable asset to Page in Qatar. The Dragons have football odds today of 11/10 to make it out of a tough group containing England, USA and Iran, and we’ll need the likes of James to be firing to be in with a chance of knockout qualification.

There is every chance that this could be the case given the 25-year-old’s start to this season on loan at Fulham, who are flying under Marco Silva. They sit in 9th at the turn of the international break, with James scoring his first goal of 2022-23 in their last outing against Manchester United. Cymru fans will be hoping he can translate this form onto the national stage in Qatar.

    Kieffer Moore
Another Premier League star who enters the 2022 World Cup on fine form is Bournemouth’s Kieffer Moore, with the 6’4 powerhouse having already scored four league goals so far this campaign. In his last three domestic outings with the Cherries, Moore has scored three goals and provided an assist, with two strikes coming in a devasting 2-3 loss at home to Tottenham.

A relative unknown on the national stage until Euro 2020, Moore also played in the majority of Cymru’s matches that campaign and even scored his first goal in a major tournament in our opener against Switzerland. While the 30-year-old has registered 28 international caps, he will be playing in the first World Cup of his career in Qatar. A domineering presence up top but more than capable with his feet, Moore offers Page a clinical option up front, which is why his odds to be Dragons’ top scorer stand at 10/3.

    Gareth Bale
Unsurprisingly top of that list, though, is captain and star man Gareth Bale. With 39 goals in a staggering 108 caps for his nation, Bale’s odds are a slightly more generous 7/4, which are attributable both to his international experience and recent club form. After a summer move to Los Angeles FC in the MLS, the 33-year-old made an instant impact in California. His 128th-minute equaliser against Philadelphia Union took LAFC to penalties on the way to becoming MLS Cup Champions in early November.

However, Bale’s importance to Rob Page goes beyond mere form. Part of both our Euro 2020 and Euro 2016 runs, the latter of which ended in the semi-finals against eventual winners Portugal, the winger has recorded three goals and two assists in major tournaments for Cymru. His two goals and an assist in the 2022 World Cup playoffs against Austria and Ukraine helped take us to Qatar, and Dragons fans will be hoping for more of the same when the tournament gets underway.

While England may be out in front as Group B favourites in Qatar, Wales is no stranger to springing a few surprises. With just four places separating USA, Wales and Iran in the FIFA men’s rankings, it is certainly all to play for in the Dragons’ first World Cup in 64 years.
