Wales beat Moldova 2-0, goals from Joe Walsh and substitute Reece Jones earned Wales a win. "It has been a good week, we had a good opportunity to go to Romania but we did not make it. FANS: FSF Cymru meeting with the FAW
    Monday 18th April 2011

    Wales t-shirt:
Summary of Football supporters Federation Wales (FSF Cymru) meeting with FAW

The meeting took place at the FAW offices in Cardiff at 4 pm Wednesday April 13th in attendance from the FSF were Paul Corkrey, Vince Alm and Neil Dymock and from the FAW. Mark Evans, Lynsey Owens (Ticketing), also present was Wayne Palmer from the south Wales police.

This was a routine meeting with questions generally been asked that were sent in from members and people who expressed a view, the following is a summary of the meeting.

Team GB has raised its head again and many Welsh fans are concerned about the possible consequences, once again Mark Evans emphasized the position of the FAW, They do not support this, they will not help with it and they will not insure players to play in it, that is an important point, insurance, many clubs will be very reluctant to release players for this, never mind the FA'S due to the insurance costs. On another point it was asked if someone like Bale or Ramsey chose to play would the FA take sanctions out against them in the future. A firm no was the answer but the players will be asked to consider seriously before agreeing taking part.

Ticket issues surrounding the England game took up a lot of time and Lucy said that she had replied to all e mails that had been sent to her from both Welsh and English fans…there were issues with fans not getting tickets through the kickback scheme, including Porth and Newport who had been particularly unhappy about what had happened…Lucy said that all applications were dealt with in a pro rata basis and the huge take up for the scheme had caught everyone out, many thousands benefited but it was accepted that due to this huge demand some clubs missed out and the FAW regret this and apologise to those clubs but it was down in a non-malicious fashion.

Anyone may e mail the ticketing department if they still feel that they have not had a satisfactory reply.

The fact that fans missed out on tickets and there was a massive segregation area also riled fans and Wayne Palmer explained that this was decided well in advance of the game and the SAG(Safety advisory groups) were more concerned about fans safety and security than adding extra seats, there had been problems with away fans in the past near to the North stand. The other area that appeared empty was a middle section near the corner flag; this was due to 150 supporters not attending who had tickets.

England away tickets were discussed and it is expected that we will get around 7,000 tickets which will ensure all Gold and Silver members will get a ticket (there are over 5,000 members) we mentioned the FA councillors tickets being returned at the Old Trafford game but Mark said this happens now and then and you are talking about only a few tickets and they are always put back on sale.

In the unlikely event of there being spare tickets the FAW may consider offering Gold members the chance of another ticket on their name but that is only one possible option and this will be looked at closer to the time, but they will try to make it as fair as possible whatever is decided.

On a security note for the England game, there is a huge coach park outside the stadium that can accommodate hundreds of coaches; there are good rail links too with a nearby tube station.

Welsh fans were prevented from hanging flags whilst English fans were allowed, Mark Evans put his hands up to this and admitted it was their fault, the stewards were not briefed properly beforehand and this led to them trying to stop fans placing their flags, Mark has promised that this will not happen again and that he personally will be at future pre match meetings with stewards and police at all future home venues.

Welsh Assembly government funding issues were raised and fans have asked why the WRU seem to get far more financial support than the national football team, Mark explained that this is not as big a difference as what it appears and Welsh football gets a lot of support in community initiatives and especially the Welsh football trust, but it was agreed that the FAW need to match the WRU in the work they put in to acquire grant funding. This is something that they are looking at and will be more proactive in the future.

We asked them to explain the benefits of the new centre at Newport and why that City was chosen over other venues especially those in north or mid Wales? It was explained that tenders were put out and the Newport city council pulled all the stops out to get the centre located in the city, the advantages of the M4 corridor will obviously be a plus point and it is hoped the centre will benefit Welsh football for many years to come. It will be a joint venture and the Football Association of Wales, Welsh Football Trust and Newport City Council aim to build the venue. The centre would develop the under-21, women's and younger age-group squads.

Membership issues and costs have been a constant irritation to the fans and we asked what the plans are for future membership schemes. Lucy suggested that they were looking at a lower price for renewals next year and fans can upgrade to Gold or Silver, the membership price will stay the same for new members and will always remain open until it reaches a level where the member benefits cannot be operated.

The data gathered from the membership scheme and from ticket sales to new customers in the kickback scheme must be put to good use and the FSF have put forward an expert in that field to meet with the marketing department later this month, hopefully progress can be made and marketing opportunities for the FAW can be improved.

One question asked by the fans is the terrible ranking position we find ourselves in and what is being done to improve this, it seems a silly question but Mark said that they were very concerned and plans were in place to get better quality friendly matches in the future, playing teams ranked below us was pointless and the other obvious answer was to help develop new Welsh talent and the Newport centre was part of that plan.

Concerns were raised amongst fans of the club rivalries raising their head at the England match and the fact three coach loads of fans were absent from the game after some problems in the city centre pre match…the FSF had received a letter via the human rights organisation "Liberty" from one of those fans that said he was refused the opportunity to see the game. Wayne said that the police were well aware of possible risk supporters entering the city and were well on top of everything…the fans mentioned were allowed access to a pub and were told that if they split up in to small groups they could continue on to the game but they decided against this and left the city.

Wayne also informed us that despite pre match concerns everyone was very pleased with the event day, over 100,000 fans had come into the capital and there were only 13 arrests in total and 8 of those was for ticket touting (part of an Olympic games police preparation initiative). There were minor scuffles in parts of the stadium but in general it was a good, safe event.

Neil Dymock brought up the Gol initiatives and explained about the fans' teams and the success they had been in bringing fans together. We have another fans tournament in Dublin next month and once again Carling has been outstanding in sponsoring the event.

Neil mentioned that the charity work had enabled them to arrange trips for 4 Montenegran Orphans to attend the Wales game against Montenegro and he also had plans for more orphans to attend the Welsh cup final, this is not a Gol initiative however but work done in conjunction with Llanelli FC. The FAW said that they would continue to support these ventures and supply signed shirts and raffle prizes to help fund raising.

The Bulgaria match is almost definitely in Sofia but still not confirmed, the last two home games will be played at the Liberty stadium and Cardiff City stadium (details available soon) there are thousands of vouchers sent out to clubs in the kickback scheme offering half price tickets for one of these games. Dublin prices have been confirmed..

The prices for the remaining Carling Nations Cup games have been confirmed today, 20 Euro each for our fans so we will sell at £18.00 each. We'd hoped there would be a concession for juniors for the May games but unfortunately there isn't. It's only for the ROI fans buying via general sale.

The FAW will get application forms sent out to Gold and Silver members in the next week or so, may take longer with the bank holidays

Road shows will continue with Jonathan Ford visiting many areas over the next few months.

We handed in some correspondence to Lucy, some good and some bad regarding the England tickets and the feedback will be taken into consideration…we then ended the meeting in agreement that it would be a good idea if more fans attended these regular meetings maybe from the other areas of Wales, anyone is welcome to come along but please e mail Mark Evans in advance.

    FAW: Roadshow, Merthyr and Neath
    Friday 8th April 2011

    FAW

    FAW ROADSHOW
The FAW has developed a Strategic Plan with the purpose of moving Welsh football forward over the next decade. As an Association, we are seeking the views and thoughts of our Members, those who play football and the public in general. To achieve this, the FAW will host a roadshow in each of the six Area Associations giving everyone the opportunity to see the current details of the plan and to raise any questions or queries.  This is your opportunity to attend a roadshow in your area to hear the details of the plan, provide input or comments and to raise any questions you have. The event is open to the Association’s Member clubs and leagues, the members of the Area Associations, players(senior or junior) and anyone with an interest in Welsh football.

    Why?
A strategic plan cannot be written in isolation and it is essential that we consult with all stakeholders across the entire country. We also need to ensure that what we are proposing is both understandable and finalised in collaboration with our stakeholders because this will be the operating manual for our Association for the years ahead.

    Who?
The roadshow will be hosted by Ian Gwyn Hughes, Head of Public Affairs and Stakeholder Engagement. Jonathan Ford, Chief Executive, will outline the current thinking and alongside Ian, will take questions from the audience in relation to the Strategic Plan. This is an opportunity for all stakeholders to learn about the Association’s plans and to raise any questions in relation to those plans or
    Welsh football in general.

The South Wales Roadshow will be held on Wednesday, 13th April 2011 at:

Merthyr Town FC Clubhouse, Penydarren Park, Merthyr Tydfil,  Doors will open at 7.00pm and the main presentation will start at 7.30pm.

The West Wales Roadshow will be held on Monday, 18th April 2011 at:

Neath AFC Clubhouse, The Gnoll, Gnoll Park Road, Neath.

"As Good As It Gets" is a 200 page soft-back book (235x135mm) that traces the history of the Welsh Schools Football Association (WSFA) from the early years of the 20th Century to the current day.

Football Association of Wales Press Officer and Historian, Ceri Stennett, has spent the last three years researching the association that has provided international football at Under 15 and 18 levels for more than 2,500 players. Of these, more than 100 have gone-on to represent Wales at senior international level. These include such well-known names as Fred Keenor, Cliff Jones, John Toshack, Terry Yorath, Brian Flynn, Mark Hughes, Robbie Savage, Wayne Hennessey, Joe Ledley and current Wales international captain, Aaron Ramsey.

The WSFA is the body that has been charged with the responsibility for discovering and nurturing young football talent in Wales through the schools system. The association runs countless competitions for schools at various age levels to compete in and then organises international matches against the other home countries, plus many more across Europe, for the age-group teams. All has this has been done by legions of teachers across the Principality who have given their time freely to advance the cause of football in Wales.

As well as focusing on the players and teams, Ceri also includes chapters written by many of the former Welsh Schools team managers. There are contributions from Chris Whitley, Lyn Jones, Dai Davies, Adrian Jones, Dafydd Owen, Roger Skyrme and Iolo Owen. In addition the current Under 16 and 18 managers, Osian Roberts and Martin Evans have also written chapters. Contributions have also been made by team administrators from the last forty years, including Derek Flye, Wyn Davies, Cledwyn Ashford, Keith James and David Nickless.

There is a full listing of all matches played with dates, results and goal-scorers, plus player appearances. All that is listed in book form for the first time ever. In addition, there are more than 250 pictures, many never before published of teams and players.

The publication will be of great interest to former players and administrators, as well as the many fans of Welsh football.

‘As Good As It Gets’ is published by Stennett Books, and will be available from April 2011 onwards, priced at £9.99. ISBN 978-09568420-0-8. Further information and orders can be placed via: Ceri Stennett

    WALES 1 GERMANY 1
The under 19 side battled to a great 1-1 draw with Germany at Parc y Scarlets, Llanelli in the opening UEFA Elite Round game.

The Germans took an early lead from a corner after eights minutes, defender Luisa Wensing rising at the far post to score from a bullet-header.

It could have been the signal for an all-out onslaught by the Germans, but instead, Jarmo Matikainen's young team fought for every ball and held the German attack at bay. Few chances came to either side for the rest of the opening 45 minutes, but Wales were beginning to grow in confidence as the half wore-on. Captain Nia Jones was very impressive in keeping the shape of the Wales defence under severe pressure.

In the second half, Wales came-out on a mission and denied Germany the time and space to build from midfield. The reward game with just ten minutes to go when captain Nia Jones scored the all-important goal for the girls in red.

It was the signal for an all-out attack from Germany but Wales held their ground and took the point from a famous 1-1 draw.

In the other game, Turkey beat Iceland 3-1 in the early kick off at Parc y Scarlets.

The next games are on Saturday at 3pm when Wales play Iceland at Stebonheath Park, Llanelli and Germany meet Turkey at Richmond Park, Carmarthen. Both games are free admission. - info from FAW.ORG.UK

Due to a hamstring injury, Gareth Bale has had to withdraw.

After training last week and playing 90 minutes on Saturday for his club, Bale felt some muscle tightness. Initially, this was expected to be muscle soreness after playing his first game. On joining-up with the squad he was kept off his feet in training for two days to recover. As he still felt tight in the warm-up on Tuesday, Gareth was pulled-out of the session. He did not train at all on Wednesday and was sent for a scan, with the scan revealing that he has picked-up his injury last week.

Aaron Ramsey will captain the side. "There were two or three candidates. I thought about what is best for the team going forward. I spoke to Aaron before making the decision and told him there were certain responsibilities and duties that would go with it, and to see if he was happy with it." - Gary Speed.

There maybe some doubts this evening Friday (25/03) about the quality of Millennium Stadium pitch. "When playing football & rugby in the same stadium the pitch will always be a concern. The groundsmen did a great job. Earlier this week the pitch was shocking." - assistant coach Raymond Verheije.

There appear to be no fresh injury worries for manager Gary Speed as the squad trained fully for the first time this morning (22/03) ahead of the clash against England.

    earlier:
    James Collins
has been passed fit to face England and could captain Wales on Saturday. The central defender took part in a full training session with his club today (Mon 21/03), before meeting up with the Wales squad in Cardiff.

has delayed joining up with the squad, the defender is still suffering from a calf injury and will remain at his club Aston Villa for treatment. He is set to  join the squad on Monday afternoon (21/03) after a fitness test.

Called up is Sam Vokes (Wolves) as a hamstring injury has forced Robert Earnshaw to withdraw. Joe Ledley is also set to join the squad on Monday after playing for his club on Sunday.

The capacity means that all of the Wales fans should be able to purchase a ticket and it also allows for the travelling England fans to have a decent quota in their part of the ground, as is agreed in the rules of the competition. The knowledge and expertise that the Millennium Stadium has for staging such high-profile events means that we can all look forward to a great afternoon of football, played and supported in the best traditions of fairplay. The fact that this is also the 100th meeting between the two countries adds spice to the occasion.
