FAW: Carling Nations Cup news
Monday 19th December 2011

The Football Association of Ireland, the Irish Football Association and the Football Association of Wales today responded to media claims about the Carling Nations Cup.

The tournament was established by the FAI, IFA, FAW and SFA in 2010 with costs and revenues to be shared and the Scottish FA getting a minimum fee requested for participation.

The competition took place in Dublin in February and May this year and returned a profit derived from television rights, sponsorship and ticket sales.

Following the tournament the FAI, the IFA and the FAW have been in negotiations with the Scottish FA seeking a downward adjustment of their fee to give a more equitable share of the profits to each of the competing associations based on the economic climate and ticket sales generated at the tournament.

It is disappointing that this matter has come into the public arena while the four associations are still trying to reach agreement. The FAI, IFA and FAW will not be making any further comment to give proper space for those discussions to take place.

FAW: The Voice

THE VOICE
The third edition of the FAW's magazine 'The Voice' is now available.

It is available from various outlets around Wales and also as a digital book on the FAW website.

It was due to go to print just as we received the tragic news of Gary Speed's death - therefore it was not possible to fully rewrite the edition - so we took the decision to pay an initial tribute to him at the start of the magazine and left most of the rest of the issue as was.

In the next edition we will look further at the legacy left by Gary and include many more tributes to him. This should be available in February / March 2012.

UNDER 19: 2012/2013 matches

U19 DRAW
The draw has been made at UEFA HQ in Nyon, Switzerland, for the 2012/2013 Under 19 Men's Championship.

The Under 19's are in Group 10 alongside Slovenia, Russia and Sweden. The matches will be held in October 2012 (10-15th October). Slovenia host the group games.

The top two teams are guaranteed qualification to the Elite Round later in the season, plus one best third-placed side.

Tribute to Gary Speed on S4C.

In a special programme tonight (Monday 28 November) the Sgorio team will pay tribute to Gary Speed, the Wales football manager, who died on Sunday 27 November at 42 years of age.

Dylan Ebenezer presents the tribute programme Gary Speed: Teyrnged at 21:30 tonight with personal tributes by former Wales internationals Dai Davies, Malcolm Allen and his friend and former team mate John Hartson.

The programme will also include tributes by The Football Association of Wales and some familiar faces from the Welsh Premier League.

Wedi 7 at 19:00 tonight on S4C will also include a tribute to the Wales manager.

Everyone in S4C extends their deepest sympathy to the family of Gary Speed.

2014 WORLD CUP: Wales in Group A fixtures

The Wales fixtures for the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers have been agreed.

"This is such a well-balanced group that we knew everyone would be looking for an early advantage. As always, there had to be some give and take, but I am very glad that we did not have to use the June qualifying dates. All the matches are double headers for us so we need to keep our good form going now through the friendly matches that we have and on to the start of the qualifiers next Autumn and beyond." - Wales manager Gary Speed.

Matches are set to begin in September 2012. If agreement cannot be reached at the meeting, it will be for FIFA to draw the matches on the set match dates.

Wales have been drawn in Group A for the 2014 World Cup qualifying rounds, also drawn in the same group are FYR Macedonia (43), Scotland (33), Belgium (22), Serbia (17) and Croatia (7).

FYR Macedonia: Wales has never played them.
Scotland: 105 meetings, the last this year in Dublin (1-3 defeat). 'Classic' matches in World Cup qualifiers in 1977 (Liverpool) and 1985 (Cardiff).
Belgium: 8 meetings, the last in 1997. The most memorable? Perhaps the 2-0 win in 1993 that featured a great free kick goal from Ryan Giggs. Three wins, one draw and four defeats.
Serbia: no meetings as a solo team, but 2 meetings when paired as Serbia & Montenegro in 2003 (two defeats)
Croatia: 2 meetings, both friendlies, the last in 2010. A draw and a defeat. info from FAW

With 53 European countries entered in the World Cup qualifying draw, teams have been drawn in eight groups of 6 teams and one group of 5.

The qualifying matches are scheduled to be played between 7 September 2012 and 15 October 2013.

The 9 group winners will qualify directly, and the eight best second-placed teams will be drawn in two-legged play-off matches to determine the other four qualifying nations.

Ranking of second-placed teams: Because one group has one team fewer than the others, matches against the sixth-placed team in each group are not included. As a result, eight matches played by each team will count for the purposes of the second-placed table.

Group fixtures meeting is due to take place in the Autumn.

According to reports Wales are in Pot 5 for the World cup draw at the end of July. To note it has been reported earlier that Wales' seeding will be decided on the July FIFA world rankings.

It has been reported that UEFA announced on Monday (6th June) the distribution of the European national teams in six pots.

NEWS: UEFA's World Cup 2014 Qualifying Pots

Pot 1 includes world champions Spain, the Netherlands, Germany, England, Portugal, Italy, Croatia, Norway, and Greece.

Pot 2 is comprised of Serbia, Slovenia, Russia, France, Montenegro, Switzerland, Slovakia, Denmark, and Sweden.

Bulgaria was placed in Pot 3 together with Turkey, the Czech Republic, Israel, Ireland, Ukraine, Belgium, Romania, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Pot placement is determined by the FIFA ranking of the national teams where Bulgaria are 47th at the moment. Bulgaria barely made it into Pot 3 as the next team in line, Lithuania, which is the first in Pot 4, is ranked 48th by FIFA with only 15 points fewer than Bulgaria.

In addition to Lithuania, Pot 4 includes Albania, Hungary, Belarus, Georgia, Armenia, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Poland.

Pot 5 features Austria, Estonia, Latvia, Finland, Macedonia, Moldova, Cyprus, Azerbaijan, and Wales.

Pot 6 consists of Iceland, Luxembourg, the Faroe Islands, Kazakhstan, Lichtenstein, Malta, Andorra, and San Marino.

Brian Flynn's Under 21s drew a blank in Armenia in their UEFA qualifier.

The match was played at the Republican Stadium in sub zero temperatures with frquent snow showers.

Wales' next match is in February when Andorra visit. Disappointment news regarding Young Gun Jonathan Williams who sustained a serious leg injury following a tackle after 72 minutes.

FAW: Alun Evans (1942-2011)
Sunday 13th November 2011

The FAW was sad to announce yesterday the passing of former secretary, Alun Evans.

Porth-born Alun had been in poor health for some time and passed-away last night (Saturday 12th November) He succeeded Trevor Morris as secretary of the association in 1982 and continued until 1995 when he left the association and was succeeded by David Collins.

He also sat on many UEFA and FIFA regulatory bodies. Later he returned as the LoW representative on the FAW Council.

For many years he was also involved with the Universities Athletics Union and was the secretary of Welsh League side UWIC.

A forthright individual, Alun was instrumental in the formation of the League of Wales and was a strong leader of the FAW policies.

Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time

The FAW has confirmed the Vauxhall International Friendly between Wales and Norway.

The game will take place on Saturday, 12th November, 2011 at the Cardiff City Stadium. Kick off at 3pm.

Update on Wales' friendly next month. Sgorio understands that Norway will be Wales' opponents on Saturday November 12th, match to be played in South Wales.

Update on Wales playing France next month. According to the French Football Federation website, France will be playing Belgium and the USA.

According to reports this morning Wales are set to travel to Costa Rica next month for their first friendly match ahead of the 2014 World Cup.

2014 WORLD CUP
The fixture meeting for World Cup Group A will take place on the 23rd of November in Brussels, nations from Group A will gather to discuss and determine the fixture calendar.

The Belgium FA will host the meeting where officials from Croatia, Serbia, Scotland, Belgium, Macedonia, and Wales will be present.

There has been much talk about the calendar in Scotland where the association will try to avoid a matchup with Macedonia and other Balkan countries in the summer when the weather is extremely warm.

This has been caused by what happened during the 2010 World Cup qualifications when Scotland lost 1:0 away to Macedonia in the scorching heat during the summer. However, the worrgy in Scotland and the rest of Group A is that Serbia and Croatia will not be able to agree on anything due to the animosity between the two countries. In that scenario, if an agreement is not reached, which has already occurred in Group D, FIFA will determine the calendar for the group. [info from macedonianfootball.com]
