    YOUNG GUNS BLOG UPDATE

Young Guns Blog by John Jones.

    Jack Evans
Before moving on to my regular contribution to the website, I would like to add my support to that mentioned recently of wishing Jack a successful recovery from the illness he is being treated for at present. A tribute also to his family, friends and team mates who have seemingly rallied wholeheartedly to give Jack assistance in his time of need. Mine are but little words of comfort to express to someone only known by name. Hopefully they can provide some kind of help to all those more immediately concerned. All Wales fans will I am sure join me in the wish that future news we encounter, will bring a message of positive results in regard to Jack’s health. We are confident that he will provide the same determination and strong qualities that have been evident on the field of play in order to have a successful outcome in his battle to overcome this condition.

    Ryan Bevan (Swansea City)
A first year Scholar with the Swans, Ryan has been a regular member of the U-18 side this season having made a handful of appearances with them during the last one. A birthdate late in 2001 had prevented him from being able to join the scholar ranks until this past summer, thereby continuing his developing career in football. A schoolboy international and then representing his country at U-17 level last season, he is presenting credentials that suggest he has potential to develop into a candidate that puts on a Swansea first team shirt in seasons ahead. I am sure that he is well aware that potential is the word that applies for now and it will need determined hard work as well as an extremely dedicated mindset before the reality of it becoming possible is under any consideration at a future point. Obviously, these qualities must be already present for him to have reached his present achievements, now they must be maintained or even improved upon as the challenges posed are probably more difficult than the ones already surmounted. Even so, there is no reason to doubt that he can successfully overcome whatever obstacle that may be presented.

    Lewis Collins (Newport County)

A player who will not reach his 18th birthday until May of next year but one that is on the first team squad periphery at Newport, confirmed by his appearance on the bench for a recent League 1 match. Not particularly surprising as he has already played in Checkatrade Trophy matches as well as being given the experience of being on the bench in the early season Carabao Cup match. Lewis will almost certainly be determined to make the most of whatever opportunity offered to be exposed to an increased difficulty of opponents confronted, as he tries to become a regular performer on the Rodney Parade pitch and delight County fans in the process. The Exiles team is achieving mostly good results this season and all concerned with them have hopes that the squad is of sufficient strength to provide a successful conclusion to the season by acquiring a status higher up the pyramid as a prize. The development of young players such as Lewis will be an important determinant in a continued sustenance of whatever progress gained. Expectations are in the affirmative that he and some others have the quality to make hopes a reality. Lewis is a member of the Wales U-19 squad, a peer group of players that have given indication of producing future senior national team candidates and so on this score his abilities have needed to be at a high talent level to be included in such company.

    Isaak Davies (Cardiff City)
Though only a first year scholar at the club having finally become eligible to do so, this is the 3rd season of representing the club at U-18 level for Isaak. Last season he played in most of the games for the team having also appeared in a third of those in the previous one and he has scored with regular frequency throughout his time of involvement. With a September 2001 birthdate, it makes him quite a few months older than many of this year’s intake but nevertheless will still be eligible for U-18 competition next season. His goal scoring record has been a big part of the reason for his participation from such a young age and if he demonstrates that he is capable of doing so against stiffer opposition then it may well be decided to use him in games against older opponents at the expense of helping the youth team. None of my speculative suggestions has been evidenced so far and of course management and coaches at the club will be much more informed as to when such decisions may be appropriate. Not only is the talent possessed, but also the physical stature deemed important when moving young players into more demanding match conditions. Hopefully Isaak will make both good and quick progress whenever challenged with more senior opponents, club and country followers would be delighted if he develops into a regular scorer in senior football. Having previously represented Wales as a schoolboy and U-17, he is now included in this season’s national U-19 squad, another trend that can hopefully be continued in the years ahead.

    Callum King-Harmes (Bolton Wanderers)
After an association with Wolves when he was a schoolboy, Callum has now moved on to Bolton and became part of the scholar intake with them prior to the star of this season. He has made a very positive impression at the club in the relatively short time there, with not only numerous appearances for the youth team but also some game time for the U-23’s when given assignments off the bench in a few of their fixtures. Considered to be primarily a wide midfield player, he is not averse to just hurting the opposition with his tricky play but can also provide some valuable goals as he has already done over the last few weeks. A continuation in such a mode will almost surely give him further opportunity to be involved in national team football, adding to the caps already received with Wales at U-16 level.

    George Rounsfell (Newcastle United)
Starting his time as a scholar with the Magpies at the beginning of this season, George has secured a regular place in the U-18 team after having been involved on a few occasions with the matchday squad last season. He has been at Newcastle for a few years, his association with them on a schoolboy status, prior to joining on a full time basis in the summer. It is assumed that George will accumulate an impressive number of appearances by season’s end and doing so will surely gather increased attention from those who decide the composition of Wales intermediate team squads. Though George has no representative honours with Wales as yet, he was an invitee for participation in squad training during his time as a schoolboy as well as being one of those on the standby list for the national U-17 squad last season.
