    Young Guns update

    Young Guns by John Jones.

January is a month when the transfer widow is open and as there has been quite an amount of activity involving the young guns it is what will be focused on in this week’s discussion.

Jordan Davies (Brighton and Hove Albion)
Wrexham’s academy has had a very good reputation that stretches back a number of decades and Jordan is the latest example of what they have been able to achieve. Brighton managed to beat quite a few clubs to his signature as they successfully negotiated his transfer. Jordan caught the eye with some very good play during his loan spell at Bangor City and so his return to Wrexham after this was brief. With the Albion amongst many people’s favourites to attain promotion and be one of the clubs in the Premier League next season the ceiling is set pretty high for Jordan. Recruitment at this time does seem to imply that in time the club feel that he has the potential to operate at such lofty heights, definitely a bonus for the Wales senior team if it is realized. It can be regarded that he has time on his side as he will not reach his 19th birthday until just after the start of next season in August, but by the same token he will need to build on his experience with first team football as soon as possible. He will be involved with the U-23 team in the near term and it will be a case of seeing how well he can deal with that and hopefully progress on from there quickly.

    Cian Harries (Coventry City)
it was an interesting development that Cian was invited for a trial at Liverpool last week. He did make an appearance in a friendly match that the U-23 team played but has since that time returned to his parent club and played in the successful Checktrade Trophy tie for them. There has been no indication as yet whether Liverpool intend to pursue further with their interest but the club did allow an U-23 left back to move on and could possibly be considering a replacement candidate. Whether this is so is entirely speculation on my part, but it is a position that Cian could occupy if Liverpool are impressed with his ability.

    Tom James (Yeovil Town)
A cancellation of the contract through a mutual agreement between club and player saw an end to Tom’s time at Cardiff City. It is probably a wise move for him as he will now have a much greater chance of making an impact as a first team player at the Huish. This comes after spending 3 seasons making appearances for the development team as he was unable to add to the solitary token first team appearance in Cardiff’s last game in their one season foray in the Premier League. I have to admit that it took me a little by surprise as he has been captain of the U-23 side this season. He has however reached a point in his career where he needs to establish what level of first team football he is capable of playing regularly and so this move may well be beneficial for him. With Cardiff almost certain to opt for defensive experience as they try and ensure they avoid relegation and if successful attempt to revive their fortunes further, then Tom would likely be denied any chance for some considerable time.

    Tommy O’Sullivan (Cardiff City)
Another player who seems imminent for a departure from the Cardiff City ranks. An appearance as a trialist in the Colchester United U-23 team has already taken place but no other development has taken place as yet. Tommy’s contract at Cardiff does expire at the end of the season and it seems the decision not to offer terms for a renewal has been made. There is little doubt that he has the ability to perform effectively as an attacking midfielder along with scoring important goals at times. It may be that he will however need to make more of an imposing influence on a game along with dealing with the physicality of regular first team football on order to be successful within the Football League.

Tyler Roberts (West Bromwich Albion – on loan at Shrewsbury Town)
The news that Shrewsbury have negotiated the loan agreement for Tyler to join them for the remainder of the season has just been released. There will likely be various updates in the weeks ahead as Tyler gains further experience of first team football.

Alex Samuel (Swansea City – on loan at Newport County)
After spending a largely successful season in Scotland, Alex has been a part of the Swansea U-23 team for the first half of this season. He played his part in what has been a very good series of results for the team, this tempting Newport to acquire his services for the second half of the season as they restructure the team in a search for positive results. A continuation of both assists in and scoring goals for the Rodney Parade first team is surely the desired outcome of this move as Newport desperately need to find a winning formula for a large proportion of their remaining matches to avoid demotion from the Football League in the spring time. Such a scenario would also enhance the value of Alex as a capable first team player.

Dylan Thomas (Aberdeen – on loan at Montrose)
Having spent the last 18 months or so as part of the Aberdeen U-20 team, Dylan will now spend some time on loan with Montrose in the Scottish League 2. He has impressed favourably in his time at Pittordie providing some good performances as well as leadership skills as he captained the U-20’s. His goal now will be to show that he is adept at first team football level and be a driving force for the Links Park team. This would possibly further convince the Aberdeen management team that he is worthy of a first team opportunity with them sooner rather than later.
